AMAKHALA GAME RESERVE
"
Among the Frontier Settlers some five generations ago, our families settled in the Eastern Cape to farm sheep and cattle on the wild and often hostile Zuurveld. We are still here in the now historic and hospitable Frontier Country, only today our Private Game Reserve offers a wildlife experience that will capture your imagination, refresh your soul and help to conserve our natural heritage. The haunting cry of the fish eagle echoes through the rugged krantzes, and the veld grass whispers with the roaming of Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra and numerous other antelope. At Amakhala you can experience the delights of the African bushveld while on safari, bushwalk, river cruise or simply with a glass of wine from the veranda of your lodge.

Here you will also experience the warm hospitality of the settler family descendents who run The Heritage Collection of Game lodges, and you may discover some of our little "secrets"; like the prehistoric bushman burial ground, or the site of Africa's most ancient dinosaur fossil finds.

NEW LIFE ON AMAKHALA
In July an addition to the elephant breeding group was discovered. All our adult elephant cows have given birth this year, so it will be a few more years before we hear the patter of little elephant feet. A few days later the buffalos also produced the 2nd young of this year. They were spotted by Mike from Woodbury in the early hour of the morning in Kudu Kloof.

There have been rumours of hyena pups for many months now. We can finally confirm our female Brown Hyena, has given birth to a litter of pups, possibly in April/ May. However, it is still unknown exactly how many have survived. Recent scats and tracks show she is now travelling around with at least one pup.

ARBOUR DAY ON AMAKHALA
This years arbour day saw the Hands On students and the Reed Valley School learners planting over 200 trees which were donated to the Conservation Center.  Trees were planted at the Reed Valley School and at the Isipho Aids Orphanage in nearby Paterson.

SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
Four lodges on Amakhala Game Reserve have recently begun the process to apply for  accreditation from Fair Trade Tourism South Africa (FFTSA).  Fair Trade is a term known internationally that indicates ethical and responsible business practice.  By joining FFTSA, Amakhala aims to consolidate its commitment to both community development and environmental conservation in the Eastern Cape
